This is a free Kruti Dev 010 typing test you can take online, right in your browser. Type the Hindi words shown on the screen for the time you choose. When the timer ends, you get your gross speed, net speed, accuracy and the words you got wrong. There is nothing to install.
Kruti Dev is the font behind a lot of government typing tests, so this page is built for people who want serious Kruti Dev typing practice. Below you will also find the full keyboard chart, the three rules that trip up almost every beginner, how speed is calculated, and a 30-day plan.
Kruti Dev 010 is an older Hindi font. It is not Unicode. When you press d, the computer stores an English letter d, and the font simply draws it as “क”. That is why Kruti Dev text turns into strange English characters when the font is missing.
| Kruti Dev 010 | Mangal | |
|---|---|---|
| Type | Legacy, non-Unicode | Unicode |
| Keyboard language | Stays on English | Hindi keyboard is added |
| Layout | Remington style | Inscript or Remington Gail |
| On Windows | Must be installed | Comes with Windows |
| Websites and mobile | Convert to Unicode first | Works directly |
Because Kruti Dev needs no Hindi keyboard, you type on the normal English keyboard. This is also why you need to learn its own layout instead of using a Hindi Inscript chart.
Here is the layout for the letter rows. A circle (◌) means the key gives a matra. Learn one row at a time, starting with the home row. Do not try to memorise all of it in one sitting.
| Row | Keys and the Hindi they give |
|---|---|
| Home row | a ◌ं s ◌े d क f ◌ि g ह h ◌ी j र k ◌ा l स ; य |
| Top row | q ◌ु w ◌ू e म r त t ज y ल u न i प o व p च |
| Bottom row | z ◌्र x ग c ब v अ b इ n द m उ , ए . ण् / ध् |
Shift+/ gives the ? character. Take your time and type each word slowly a few times.
| Word | Keys | Typed as |
|---|---|---|
| कम | d e | de |
| राम | j k e | jke |
| घर | Shift+/ k j | ?kj |
| भारत | Shift+h k k j r | Hkkjr |
| किसान | f d l k u | fdlku |
| प्रकाश | i z d k ' k | izdk'k |
| ज्ञान | Shift+k k u | Kku |
| हिन्दी | f g Shift+u n h | fgUnh |
| Word | Keys | Typed as |
|---|---|---|
| का | d k | dk |
| कि | f d | fd |
| की | d h | dh |
| कु | d q | dq |
| कू | d w | dw |
| के | d s | ds |
| कै | d Shift+s | dS |
| को | d k s | dks |
| कौ | d k Shift+s | dkS |
| कं | d a | da |
To write “कि”, press f first and then d. Most beginners get this wrong, because it feels backwards. It is the opposite of Inscript.
Hold Shift and press the letter’s key. Shift+d gives क्, Shift+r gives त् and Shift+u gives न्. That is how “हिन्दी” is typed.
Letters like भ, श and ख are typed as a half form followed by k.
| Letter | Keys | Typed as |
|---|---|---|
| ख | [ k | [k |
| घ | Shift+/ k | ?k |
| थ | Shift+f k | Fk |
| ध | / k | /k |
| भ | Shift+h k | Hk |
| श | ' k | 'k |
| ष | Shift+' k | "k |
| ण | . k | .k |
For a conjunct with र, use z for the ्र sign. For example, “प्र” is iz. Shift+z gives the reph (र्).
Most tests treat every 5 characters, spaces included, as one word. Your speed is then worked out from these four numbers.
| Term | Formula |
|---|---|
| Gross speed (GWPM) | (Total characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes |
| Error rate | Wrong words ÷ minutes |
| Net speed (NWPM) | GWPM − error rate |
| Accuracy (%) | Correct words ÷ total words × 100 |
Example: in a 10-minute test you type 1,500 characters with 9 wrong words.
Some exams count key depressions, which means every key you press. In Kruti Dev, a two-key letter like भ (Hk) counts as two key presses in that method. Check how your exam counts.
Many state-level and office typing tests use Kruti Dev 010 or DevLys 010 with the Remington layout. Other tests, especially computer-based ones, use Mangal with Inscript. The notification is the only reliable guide, so find the font and layout in it before you start practising. Then stay with them.
You only need this if you want to practise in Word or Notepad. The online test does not need it.
.ttf file of Kruti Dev 010 from a trusted source and scan it with your antivirus.Kruti Dev text works only where the font is installed. If you paste it into a website, WhatsApp or a mobile app, you will see English gibberish. To fix this, convert the text to Unicode with an online Kruti Dev to Unicode converter, then read it once to catch any errors. Converters are not perfect, especially with conjunct letters, so always proofread the result.
Get the three rules into your fingers first. Speed built on wrong habits has to be unlearned later.
Keep your eyes on the screen. If you keep peeking, cover your hands with a cloth or a sheet of paper.
Mistakes reduce your net speed. Slow down until your errors drop.
Take the wrong words from your result card and type each ten times slowly. Then try a full test again.
30 minutes daily works better than three hours once a week.
Keep your back straight, elbows at about 90 degrees and wrists level. Rest your fingers on A S D F and J K L ; and return to them after every key.
Around 30 to 40 WPM, many people stop improving. Type one minute faster than is comfortable, then type a test slowly with no mistakes. Change the practice text often. Most people break through in one or two weeks.
| What went wrong | Why | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Wrong letter order in कि | ि was typed after the letter | Press f first, then d |
| Text full of English symbols | Caps Lock is on, or the font is wrong | Switch Caps Lock off and pick Kruti Dev 010 |
| भ or श comes out wrong | The two-key letter was typed as one key | Half key first, then k (Hk, ‘k) |
| Half letter missing | Shift was not pressed | Shift with the letter key |
| Odd symbols after a word | Wrong key near the matra keys | Slow down and use the correct finger |
| Week | What to do | Daily time |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Home row only. Learn a, s, d, f, g, h, j, k, l and ;. Type short words like कल, कम, कर. | 20 minutes |
| Week 2 | Top and bottom rows and every matra. Practise the ि rule. | 30 minutes |
| Week 3 | Half letters, two-key letters, punctuation. Start a 5-minute test every day. | 30 to 40 minutes |
| Week 4 | Full-length tests, weak-word drills and a written score log. | 40 minutes |
Kruti Dev 010 is a legacy (non-Unicode) Hindi font. You press keys on an English keyboard and the font shows Hindi letters. It is widely used in government offices, DTP work and many typing tests.
Both are older Hindi fonts that follow the Remington style of layout, and exam notices often name them together. Small differences can exist, so practise on the exact font your exam names.
Mangal is a Unicode font that comes with Windows and works everywhere. Kruti Dev must be installed, the keyboard stays on English, and the text needs to be converted to Unicode before it is used on websites or mobile phones.
Press the f key before the letter. To write कि, press f and then d. It is the opposite of Inscript, where the matra is typed after the letter.
Hold Shift and press the key of the letter. For example, Shift+d gives क् and Shift+r gives त्. In हिन्दी, the half न् comes from Shift+u.
It depends on the exam and the post. Many notifications mention figures around 25 to 35 WPM for Hindi. Read the latest official notification for your exam.
With 30 to 40 minutes of daily practice, most people learn the keys and the three main rules in 3 to 4 weeks. Speed and accuracy improve over the next few months.
Because the text is stored as English letters and only the font turns them into Hindi. If the font is missing or changed, you will see gibberish. Convert the text to Unicode before sharing it online.
Switch Caps Lock off, keep the keyboard on English and take your first test. The first score is only a starting point. Come back tomorrow, note your progress and see how it grows.
