How English typing speed is calculated

Words are not all the same length, so typing tests use a standard. Every 5 characters, including spaces and punctuation, count as one word. That keeps the typing test fair for every text.

TermFormulaMeaning
Gross speed (GWPM)(Total characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutesYour speed, ignoring mistakes
Error rateWrong words ÷ minutesWords per minute lost to mistakes
Net speed (NWPM)GWPM − error rateYour real speed
Accuracy (%)Correct words ÷ total words × 100How clean your typing is

Worked example

You take a 5-minute test and type 1,100 characters, with 10 wrong words.

  • Words typed: 1,100 ÷ 5 = 220
  • Gross speed: 220 ÷ 5 = 44 WPM
  • Error rate: 10 ÷ 5 = 2 words per minute
  • Net speed: 44 − 2 = 42 WPM
  • Accuracy: 210 correct words out of 220 = about 95.5%

Most tests treat a missed word, an extra word and a wrong word as full mistakes. Smaller slips such as a wrong capital letter, a missing space or a spelling error inside a word are often treated as half mistakes. The exact rule depends on the exam.

WPM and KDPH: what is the difference?

Some exam notices give the required speed as KDPH, which stands for key depressions per hour. It counts every key you press in one hour. One word is 5 key presses, and an hour has 60 minutes, so WPM = KDPH ÷ 300.

KDPHSame speed in WPM
5,000about 16.7
8,000about 26.7
9,00030
10,000about 33.3
10,50035
Note: Required speeds and scoring rules are different for every post and change over time. Use this test for practice and always follow your official notification.

What is a good typing speed?

Here is a rough guide. It is not an official scale, but it helps you set goals.

Speed (WPM)Level
Below 20Beginner
20 to 35Getting there
35 to 50Good for most jobs and exams
50 to 70Very good
70 and aboveProfessional

The average person types at around 40 WPM. If you reach 40 WPM with high accuracy, you are already ahead for most office and data-entry jobs.

Tips to increase your typing speed

Use all ten fingers

Each finger has its own keys. Two-finger typing stops growing at a low speed, while ten-finger typing keeps improving with practice.

Do not look at the keyboard

Look at the screen. If you keep peeking, cover your hands with a cloth or a sheet of paper. Feel the small bumps on F and J to find the home row.

Accuracy first

Speed with mistakes gives a low net score. Slow down until your errors drop, then push the speed up little by little.

Keep a steady rhythm

Type at an even pace. Fast bursts followed by long pauses give less speed than a smooth, steady flow.

Read ahead

Keep your eyes two or three words ahead of your fingers. This helps your hands move without stopping.

Use the right Shift key

For a capital letter, press Shift with the opposite hand’s pinky. It keeps your hands in position and saves time.

Practise punctuation and numbers

Many people are fast on letters but slow on commas, full stops and numbers. Practise them on their own for a few minutes a day.

Sit properly and take breaks

Keep your back straight, elbows at about 90 degrees and wrists level. Every 20 minutes, look at something far away for 20 seconds and shake out your hands.

Practice words and common slips

Practise each row on its own, then mix them. The bottom row makes very few words alone, so use it with other rows.

RowPractice words
Home rowask, sad, dad, half, flask, salad, glass, shall, flash
Top rowtype, write, power, quiet, pretty, tower, route, property
Bottom rowman, can, mix, zinc, brave, cabin, number, member

Watch out for these common slips:

The typing speed plateau

Many people improve fast at first and then get stuck around 40 WPM. That is normal. Your fingers know the basics, so practice runs on autopilot and old mistakes stay. To break through, try one-minute sprints a little faster than comfortable, then a slow test with zero mistakes. Practise your weak words, use new texts often, and rest for a day if you feel stuck. Most people move forward again within one or two weeks.

English typing test: frequently asked questions

What is a good typing speed in English?

Around 40 WPM is a good speed for most office work, and 50 to 60 WPM is very good. Many typing tests for jobs ask for roughly 30 to 35 WPM, but the number depends on the exam, so check your notification.

How is English typing speed calculated?

Most tests count every 5 characters, spaces included, as one word. Gross speed is the words typed divided by the minutes. Net speed is gross speed minus your errors per minute.

What is the difference between WPM and KDPH?

WPM means words per minute. KDPH means key depressions per hour, which is the number of keys you press in an hour. Since one word is 5 key presses, you can convert KDPH to WPM by dividing by 300.

How can I increase my typing speed?

Stop looking at the keyboard, use all ten fingers, practise a little every day, and fix the words you get wrong. Focus on accuracy first, because speed follows once your mistakes drop.

Which test time should I choose, 1 minute or 5 minutes?

A 1-minute test is good for a quick check and for sprints. A 5 or 10-minute test is better for exam practice, because it shows how well you keep your speed and accuracy over time.

Why is my typing speed lower in a timed test than in practice?

Nerves, unfamiliar words and pressure are the usual reasons. Take the test often so it feels normal, and practise the words that appear in your mistakes list.

Does accuracy matter more than speed?

In most tests, yes. Every mistake reduces your net speed, and some exams also have a minimum accuracy. A slightly slower test with few mistakes usually scores better.

Can I use this test to prepare for a government typing exam?

Yes, as practice. Exams have their own rules for mistakes and time, so always follow the official notification for your exam.
