How to Learn English Typing: Easy Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners (2026)
How to Learn English Typing: Easy Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners (2026)
Do you want to learn English typing but feel that you are too slow, or that you always have to look at the keys? Good news: typing is a skill, and anyone can learn it. In this guide you will see exactly where each finger goes, how to practise every day, and how to check your speed. No hard words, just simple steps.
Step 1: Sit the right way
Sit straight, with your back against the chair and both feet flat on the floor.
Keep your elbows bent at about 90 degrees.
Keep your wrists straight. Do not bend them up or down.
Keep the screen at eye level, about an arm’s length away.
Take a short break every 20 minutes. Look away from the screen and shake your hands.
Step 2: Find the home row
The home row is the middle row of letters. Put your left fingers on ASDF and your right fingers on JKL;. Rest both thumbs on the space bar.
Now touch the F and J keys. You will feel a small bump on each. These bumps help your index fingers find the home row without looking. After you press any key, bring your finger back here.
Step 3: Finger placement chart
Every finger has its own keys. The chart below shows which finger presses which key. The small black line on F and J shows the bumps.
Keyboard finger placement chart, with each key coloured by finger
Left pinky: Q A Z 1 `
Left ring finger: W S X 2
Left middle finger: E D C 3
Left index finger (two columns): R T F G V B 4 5
Right index finger (two columns): Y U H J N M 6 7
Right middle finger: I K , 8
Right ring finger: O L . 9
Right pinky: P ; / 0 – = [ ] ‘
The space bar is pressed with the thumb. Enter and Backspace are pressed with the right pinky.
Step 4: The 5 golden rules of touch typing
Do not look at the keyboard. Look at the screen or the paper.
Use the right finger for every key. Even if it feels slow at first.
Accuracy first, speed later. If you make many mistakes, slow down.
Keep a steady rhythm. Type at an even pace instead of fast and slow bursts.
Return to the home row after each key.
Step 5: Practise row by row
Learn one row at a time. Start with the home row and add the next row only when you can type the first one without looking.
Row
Letters
Practice words
Home row

The bottom row makes very few words on its own, so practise it together with the other rows.
Step 6: Shift, numbers and symbols
For a capital letter, press Shift with your opposite pinky. To type A in capital, press the right Shift. To type P in capital, press the left Shift. Learn the number row only after you are comfortable with the letters. Reach up from the home row with the same finger and come back.
Step 7: Check your typing speed
Typing speed is counted in WPM, which means words per minute. In typing tests, one word is counted as 5 characters, including spaces.
Gross WPM = (total characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. Net WPM = gross WPM − mistakes per minute.
Example: You type 250 characters in 1 minute with 5 mistakes. Gross WPM is 250 ÷ 5 = 50. Net WPM is 50 − 5 = 45.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to learn English typing?
With 20 to 30 minutes of practice every day, most beginners learn all the keys in about 3 to 4 weeks. Reaching 40 WPM or more usually takes a few months of regular practice.
What is the correct finger placement on a keyboard?
Place your left fingers on A, S, D, F and your right fingers on J, K, L, ; with both thumbs on the space bar. Every finger presses only the keys near it and then returns to this home row.
What is a good typing speed?
Around 40 WPM is a good speed for most office work. 50 to 60 WPM is very good. Many typing tests for jobs ask for around 30 to 35 WPM, but check your own exam notice.
How can I stop looking at the keyboard while typing?
Feel the small bumps on the F and J keys, cover your keyboard with a cloth or a sheet of paper, and practise slowly. Accuracy comes first and speed comes later.
What is touch typing?
Touch typing means typing without looking at the keys, using all ten fingers. Each finger has its own keys, so your hands learn the positions by feel.
Final words
Learning English typing is easy when you go one step at a time. Sit properly, start from the home row, follow the finger chart, and practise every day. In a month you will be typing without looking at the keyboard. Start today with the sentence “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.” and see how you do. Have a question? Write it in the comments.
Kruti Dev 010
Kruti Dev 010

Kruti Dev 010
Kruti Dev 010
Kruti Dev
Kruti Dev 010
Language & Region
Add a language दबाइए, Hindi खोजिए और Install कीजिए।
(Inscript)

Mangal

Top Benefits of Learning Touch Typing, and How to Start for Free
Top Benefits of Learning Touch Typing | FreeSteno.in
Touch typing, the ability to type accurately without looking at the keyboard, is one of those skills that’s pretty underrated. It takes a few weeks to build and pays off for years afterward, whether you’re a student, an office worker, a government exam aspirant, or an aspiring stenographer. FreeSteno.in makes learning it free and accessible to anyone with a browser.
What Touch Typing Actually Means
It means using all ten fingers, each assigned to specific keys based on the home-row position, ASDF for the left hand, JKL; for the right, to type without ever glancing down at the keyboard. That’s different from hunt-and-peck typing, where you look at each key before pressing it, which caps your speed and adds unnecessary neck and eye strain over long sessions.
1. Real Speed Gains
Touch typists routinely hit 60 to 100+ words per minute, compared to 20 to 30 WPM for most hunt-and-peck typists. For anyone prepping for a government english typing or Hindi typing exam, that gap can genuinely be the difference between passing and not.
2. Better Accuracy Over Long Sessions
Because touch typists build strong muscle memory for key positions, they tend to make fewer mistakes during long sessions compared to hunt-and-peck typists, who often lose focus and accuracy as fatigue sets in from constantly shifting between the screen and keyboard.
3. Less Physical Strain
Constantly looking down and back up causes unnecessary neck strain and doesn’t help your posture either. Touch typing keeps your eyes on the screen and your posture more consistent, which cuts down on physical discomfort during long work or study sessions.
4. Better Focus, More Gets Done
When you’re not consciously thinking about where each key is, your mental energy goes toward what you’re actually writing, an essay, an email, code, exam answers, instead of the mechanics of typing itself. That leads to better focus and, honestly, higher-quality work in less time.
A touch typist working at 70 WPM finishes in 10 minutes what takes a hunt-and-peck typist at 25 WPM close to 30 minutes.
5. Basically Required for Stenography and Many Government Exams
Touch typing isn’t just nice to have, it’s a hard requirement for a lot of government jobs, data entry operator posts, clerical positions, and especially stenographer roles, where you need to transcribe audio dictation accurately under a strict clock. Without touch typing, hitting those speed requirements gets really difficult.
Getting Started for Free
Start with the free online keyboard on FreeSteno.in to learn correct home-row finger placement.
Practice basic key drills daily, resisting the urge to look down.
Move up to full words and sentences using the beginner-friendly typing tutor exercises.
Take regular timed tests to track your speed and accuracy over time.
Use Word Defender and Type Arena to reinforce what you’ve learned in a more engaging way.
It Applies to Hindi Typing Too
Touch typing principles carry over to Hindi typing in Mangal and Kruti Dev just as well. Once you understand the Inscript or Remington key layout logic, the same muscle-memory techniques that speed up English typing will make your Hindi typing faster and more accurate too.
Ready to build a skill that pays off for the rest of your career? Start your free touch typing journey today.
Touch typing is a foundational skill that improves speed, accuracy, focus, and even physical comfort during long computer sessions, and it’s especially critical if you’re pursuing a government exam or stenography career. Best part is you can build it completely free using the typing tutor, keyboard practice, timed tests, and games on FreeSteno.in.
Free Font Converter: Convert Mangal to Kruti Dev and Kruti Dev to Mangal
Free Font Converter – Mangal to Kruti Dev & Back | FreeSteno.in
Ever opened a Hindi document and seen a wall of garbled, unreadable text instead of proper Hindi characters? That’s the classic Mangal-Kruti Dev compatibility problem. The free font converter on FreeSteno.in fixes this instantly, converting text between Mangal (Unicode) and Kruti Dev (non-Unicode) in seconds, no software required.
Why You’d Need This
Mangal and Kruti Dev use completely different character encoding. Mangal follows the universal Unicode standard, Kruti Dev uses its own custom ASCII-based mapping. Which means a few things in practice:
Text typed in Kruti Dev looks like random English characters on a system without the Kruti Dev font installed
Text copied from a Kruti Dev document can’t be searched or edited properly in Unicode-based tools or most modern websites without converting it first
Offices and courts that moved from Kruti Dev to Mangal often end up with piles of old documents that need converting
Our free converter bridges that gap instantly, so you’re never stuck with text you can’t actually use.
How to Use the Converter
Go to FreeSteno.in and open the Font Converter tool.
Paste your Hindi text into the input box.
Pick the direction, Mangal to Kruti Dev or Kruti Dev to Mangal.
Click convert, and the properly formatted text shows up instantly in the output box.
Copy it and paste it wherever you need, a document, a form, a website.
A common use here: converting old Kruti Dev government or court documents into modern, searchable Mangal Unicode text that’s easier to edit and share.
Who Needs a Converter Like This
Government office staff digitizing older Kruti Dev documents into Unicode
Students and typists submitting documents in a specific font format required by an exam or employer
Content creators and website owners who need Unicode-compatible Hindi text for the web
Legal and court professionals working with historical Kruti Dev records
Anyone who got a Hindi document that looks garbled and just needs it fixed
Why This Saves Real Time
Manually retyping a whole document just to switch fonts is slow and easy to mess up, and honestly unnecessary with a proper converter. This one handles even long passages instantly, keeping the original meaning intact while it swaps the underlying character encoding, saving you hours you’d otherwise spend retyping.
Pair the Converter With Typing Practice
If you regularly work with both Mangal and Kruti Dev text, it’s worth actually learning to type in both rather than leaning on conversion every time. FreeSteno.in has free typing practice in both formats, so you can type confidently in whichever a task calls for, and keep the converter around as a backup for whenever text shows up in the wrong format.
Stop wrestling with garbled Hindi text. Convert it instantly, for free.
Whether you’re modernizing old records, submitting a document in a specific format, or just fixing garbled Hindi text, the free font converter on FreeSteno.in gives you an instant fix. Pair it with the free Mangal and Kruti Dev typing practice to get fully comfortable working across both.
Free Online Keyboard: Practice Typing Without Installing Anything
Not everyone can install extra software on their computer, especially office systems, school computers, or shared devices. That’s exactly why FreeSteno.in has a free online keyboard that runs entirely in the browser, no installation, no admin permissions, no cost. It’s a solid tool for learning key positions, getting used to Hindi typing layouts, and reinforcing correct finger placement.
What Is It?
It’s a visual, on-screen keyboard that highlights each key as you type, helping beginners learn correct finger-to-key mapping without downloading anything. It works for English QWERTY and Hindi layouts too, Inscript for Mangal, Remington for Kruti Dev, which makes it useful across different typing goals.
How to Use It
Open FreeSteno.in and go to Online Keyboard.
Pick your layout, English QWERTY, Hindi Inscript for Mangal, or Hindi Remington for Kruti Dev.
Start typing on your physical keyboard and watch the matching keys light up on screen.
Use that visual feedback to correct your finger placement and build real muscle memory.
Once you’re comfortable, move on to full typing tests to measure your speed and accuracy.
Seeing the right key light up as you type reinforces the connection between muscle memory and visual recognition, and that really speeds up learning, especially for Hindi layouts that feel unfamiliar at first.
Who Gets the Most Out of This
Absolute beginners learning correct finger placement for the first time
Hindi typing learners unfamiliar with Inscript or Remington
Students on shared or restricted computers who can’t install typing tutor software
Anyone switching between English and Hindi typing who wants a quick visual reference
Why Browser-Based Beats Installed Software
A lot of typing tutor programs need installation, admin access, or payment for the full feature set. A browser-based keyboard skips all of that. You can access it from any device with an internet connection, a school computer lab, a cyber cafe, an office desktop, your own laptop, it doesn’t matter. Nothing to install, update, or configure. It just works the second you open the page.
Pair It With Real Practice
The online keyboard works best as a learning aid early on, while you’re building correct habits. Once key positions feel natural, move on to the full typing tests, English typing, Hindi Mangal and Kruti Dev, and the free steno dictation tool, to build real speed and exam-ready accuracy. How to Improve Typing Speed and Accuracy: Practical Tips That Work
How to Improve Typing Speed and Accuracy – Tips & Tricks | FreeSteno.in
Whether you’re prepping for a government exam, working a data entry job, or just want to move faster on your keyboard day to day, improving typing speed and accuracy is a learnable skill. It doesn’t need an expensive course, just the right technique, some consistency, and honest feedback along the way. Here’s what actually works, and how the free tools on FreeSteno.in tie into each one.
1. Get Your Finger Placement Right First
Before chasing speed, make sure your fingers actually rest correctly on the home row: left hand on A, S, D, F, right hand on J, K, L, semicolon. Each finger owns specific keys, and sticking to the right finger for each one is what eventually lets you type without ever looking down. The free online keyboard here is a good way to visually confirm you’re doing this right while you’re still building the habit.
2. Accuracy Before Speed
It’s tempting to just go fast, but speed built on sloppy accuracy doesn’t hold up, and most exams calculate a “net speed” that deducts points for errors anyway. Slow down a bit, focus on hitting the right keys every time, and let speed grow naturally as accuracy becomes automatic. Check your error report after every test to see exactly which keys or word patterns keep tripping you up.
3. Practice Daily, Even Briefly
Consistency beats intensity, every time. Fifteen or twenty focused minutes a day builds far stronger muscle memory than one exhausting session once a week. Try practicing around the same time each day, first thing in the morning or right before bed both work well for a lot of people.
4. Stop Looking at the Keyboard
Glancing down constantly breaks your rhythm and slows you down a lot more than it feels like in the moment. It’s uncomfortable at first, sure, but forcing yourself to look only at the screen, even if you type slower and mess up more early on, is one of the fastest ways to actually build touch-typing speed.
Quick trick: cover your hands with a cloth or dim the lights during early practice sessions. It breaks the habit of glancing down faster than you’d think.
5. Use Games to Build Reflexes Without Getting Burned Out
Games like Word Defender and Type Arena train fast, accurate keystrokes in a low-pressure format that doesn’t feel like a grind. Mixing game-based practice in with structured tests keeps your motivation up and helps avoid the burnout that comes from purely repetitive drills.
6. Practice Under Real Exam Conditions
If you’re preparing for a specific exam, practice under the exact time limits and passage length you’ll actually face. The English typing test, Hindi Mangal and Kruti Dev practice, and the free steno dictation tool all include realistic timers, so you build speed and time management together, not just raw typing ability.
7. Review Every Mistake, Not Just the Score
Your overall WPM and accuracy percentage only tell part of the story. Real improvement comes from seeing exactly which words or letters you keep getting wrong. The detailed, single-page mistake breakdown after every test here exists specifically so you can target your weak points instead of repeating the same errors without noticing.
8. Increase Difficulty Gradually
Once a certain passage length, speed, or difficulty starts feeling easy, push yourself a bit further. The same idea used in fitness training, gradually increasing the challenge, applies just as well to typing. Small, steady increases in difficulty add up to real long-term improvement without overwhelming you.
Put these tips to work right now with a free, realistic typing test, and track your progress every day.
Improving your typing speed and accuracy is a gradual process built on correct technique, daily practice, and honest self-review, not shortcuts. FreeSteno.in gives you every free tool needed to put these tips into action right away: realistic typing tests, instant detailed feedback, and games that keep the whole process enjoyable.
SSC and Court Stenographer Typing Test: A Practical Preparation Guide
SSC & Court Stenographer Typing Test Guide | FreeSteno.in
SSC Stenographer and various court stenographer exams are some of the most sought-after government jobs in India, with stable careers and a clear path forward. But the skill test portion, where you have to transcribe spoken dictation into typed text within a strict time limit, trips up plenty of well-prepared candidates who simply never practiced under realistic conditions. Here’s what to expect, and how to actually prepare for it using the free steno tool on FreeSteno.in.
How the SSC Stenographer Exam Is Structured
It usually runs in two stages:
Computer Based Examination: objective questions on General Intelligence, General Awareness, and English Language
Skill Test: you’re given a dictation passage, typically 80 WPM for Grade D and 100 WPM for Grade C, which you transcribe on a computer within a set time, usually around 50 minutes for English and 65 for Hindi
Court stenographer exams, run by various High Courts and District Courts, follow a broadly similar pattern, though the exact speed and time limits shift a bit depending on the state and court.
Why the Skill Test Trips People Up
Plenty of candidates sail through the written paper and then stumble in the skill test, mostly because they never practiced listening and typing at the same time under real timed pressure. Reading a passage and typing it is a completely different skill from hearing audio dictation once and transcribing it accurately. That gap is exactly what the free steno tool on this site is built to close.
How to Practice for the Skill Test
Go to FreeSteno.in and open the Steno Typing section.
Pick a dictation passage that matches your target speed, 80 WPM, 100 WPM, or higher.
Play the audio once, exactly as it works in the real exam.
Type your transcription within the time limit, no pausing or replaying.
Submit and instantly get a detailed, single-page breakdown of your accuracy and every specific mistake.
On exam day, don’t chase perfection on your first pass. Capture as much accurate content as you can, then use whatever time’s left to review and fix errors before submitting.
Building Speed Gradually
New to steno dictation? Don’t jump straight to your target exam speed. Start with slower passages to get comfortable with the listen-and-type rhythm, then work up to 80 WPM, then 100, and beyond as accuracy improves. The graded dictation library here makes that gradual climb pretty straightforward.
Mistakes Worth Avoiding
Practicing only with written passages instead of real audio
Skipping timed conditions, which usually leads to poor time management on the actual day
Chasing speed while ignoring accuracy, which hurts your net score directly
Not reviewing detailed mistake reports after practice, missing patterns that keep repeating
Rounding Out Your Prep
Beyond dictation, sharpen your baseline typing speed with the free English typing test and Hindi Mangal or Kruti Dev practice, whichever language your target exam uses. Our typing games, Word Defender and Type Arena, work well too, as a lower-pressure way to build reflexes between focused dictation sessions.
Get the realistic, exam-style dictation practice most candidates skip, completely free, with instant feedback.
Clearing the SSC or court stenographer skill test really comes down to consistent, realistic dictation practice combined with strong baseline typing speed. FreeSteno.in gives you free audio dictation, exam-style timing, and instant detailed feedback, everything you need to walk into your exam prepared.

Learning to type the right way from the start saves you years of bad habits down the line. Whether you’re a student typing for the very first time or an adult switching careers, a good typing tutor teaches proper finger placement, builds muscle memory, and steadily pushes your speed and accuracy up. FreeSteno.in has a free typing tutor built specifically for absolute beginners.
Why Beginners Need Structure
A lot of people learn to type by just hunting and pecking, looking at the keyboard, typing with two fingers. It works for casual use, sure, but it caps your top speed pretty hard, and it makes touch typing, typing without looking down, almost impossible to pick up later. A structured tutor teaches correct home-row finger positions right from day one, which is really the foundation everything else builds on.
How the Tutor Works Here
Open FreeSteno.in and go to Typing Tutor.
Start with home-row exercises, ASDF and JKL;, to build correct finger placement from the get-go.
Move through gradually harder exercises, more keys, then full words, then complete sentences.
Use our free online virtual keyboard to visually check your finger-to-key mapping as you go.
Once you’re comfortable, move on to full typing tests and games like Word Defender and Type Arena.
Try not to look down at your keyboard, even if it slows you down early on. Touch typing without looking is really the single biggest factor in long-term speed gains.
A Simple Learning Path
Weeks 1 to 2: Master the home row and correct finger placement without peeking
Weeks 3 to 4: Expand to the full alphabet, numbers, and common punctuation
Weeks 5 to 6: Practice full words and short sentences, focusing on accuracy over speed
Week 7 onward: Start timing yourself, track your WPM, and gradually push speed higher without losing accuracy
This gradual approach stops beginners from picking up bad habits that are hard to unlearn later, and builds a foundation that carries over into Hindi typing too.
