This is a free Kruti Dev 010 typing test you can take online, right in your browser. Type the Hindi words shown on the screen for the time you choose. When the timer ends, you get your gross speed, net speed, accuracy and the words you got wrong. There is nothing to install.

Kruti Dev is the font behind a lot of government typing tests, so this page is built for people who want serious Kruti Dev typing practice. Below you will also find the full keyboard chart, the three rules that trip up almost every beginner, how speed is calculated, and a 30-day plan.

How to take the Kruti Dev typing test

  1. Enter your name and choose the timer. Start with 5 minutes.
  2. Keep your keyboard on English and switch Caps Lock off.
  3. Click Start, click in the typing box and type the highlighted word. Press the space bar after each word.
  4. When the timer ends, read your result card. Look closely at the wrong words, because they show exactly what to practise next.

What is Kruti Dev 010?

Kruti Dev 010 is an older Hindi font. It is not Unicode. When you press d, the computer stores an English letter d, and the font simply draws it as “क”. That is why Kruti Dev text turns into strange English characters when the font is missing.

Because Kruti Dev needs no Hindi keyboard, you type on the normal English keyboard. This is also why you need to learn its own layout instead of using a Hindi Inscript chart.

Kruti Dev 010 keyboard layout

Here is the layout for the letter rows. A circle (◌) means the key gives a matra. Learn one row at a time, starting with the home row. Do not try to memorise all of it in one sitting.

The 3 rules every Kruti Dev typist must know

Rule 1: the ि matra is typed first

To write “कि”, press f first and then d. Most beginners get this wrong, because it feels backwards. It is the opposite of Inscript.

Rule 2: half letters come from Shift

Hold Shift and press the letter’s key. Shift+d gives क्, Shift+r gives त् and Shift+u gives न्. That is how “हिन्दी” is typed.

Rule 3: some letters take two keys

Letters like भ, श and ख are typed as a half form followed by k.

LetterKeysTyped as
ख[ k[k
घShift+/ k?k
थShift+f kFk
ध/ k/k
भShift+h kHk
श' k'k
षShift+' k"k
ण. k.k

For a conjunct with र, use z for the ्र sign. For example, “प्र” is iz. Shift+z gives the reph (र्).

How speed is calculated in a Kruti Dev typing test

Most tests treat every 5 characters, spaces included, as one word. Your speed is then worked out from these four numbers.

TermFormula
Gross speed (GWPM)(Total characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
Error rateWrong words ÷ minutes
Net speed (NWPM)GWPM − error rate
Accuracy (%)Correct words ÷ total words × 100

Example: in a 10-minute test you type 1,500 characters with 9 wrong words.

  • Words typed: 1,500 ÷ 5 = 300
  • Gross speed: 300 ÷ 10 = 30 WPM
  • Error rate: 9 ÷ 10 = 0.9 words per minute
  • Net speed: 30 − 0.9 = 29.1 WPM
  • Accuracy: 291 correct words out of 300 = 97%

Some exams count key depressions, which means every key you press. In Kruti Dev, a two-key letter like भ (Hk) counts as two key presses in that method. Check how your exam counts.

Note: Mistakes are scored differently in different exams. See our Hindi typing test page for full and half mistakes and two common scoring methods.

Kruti Dev in government typing exams

Many state-level and office typing tests use Kruti Dev 010 or DevLys 010 with the Remington layout. Other tests, especially computer-based ones, use Mangal with Inscript. The notification is the only reliable guide, so find the font and layout in it before you start practising. Then stay with them.

Install Kruti Dev 010 on Windows

You only need this if you want to practise in Word or Notepad. The online test does not need it.

  1. Download the .ttf file of Kruti Dev 010 from a trusted source and scan it with your antivirus.
  2. Right-click the file and choose Install.
  3. Restart Word, choose the font Kruti Dev 010 and keep the keyboard on English.

Kruti Dev to Unicode: why and how

Kruti Dev text works only where the font is installed. If you paste it into a website, WhatsApp or a mobile app, you will see English gibberish. To fix this, convert the text to Unicode with an online Kruti Dev to Unicode converter, then read it once to catch any errors. Converters are not perfect, especially with conjunct letters, so always proofread the result.

Tips to improve your Kruti Dev typing speed

Learn the rules before the speed

Get the three rules into your fingers first. Speed built on wrong habits has to be unlearned later.

Do not look at the keyboard

Keep your eyes on the screen. If you keep peeking, cover your hands with a cloth or a sheet of paper.

Accuracy first

Mistakes reduce your net speed. Slow down until your errors drop.

Practise your weak words

Take the wrong words from your result card and type each ten times slowly. Then try a full test again.

Practise every day

30 minutes daily works better than three hours once a week.

Sit properly

Keep your back straight, elbows at about 90 degrees and wrists level. Rest your fingers on A S D F and J K L ; and return to them after every key.

Break the plateau

Around 30 to 40 WPM, many people stop improving. Type one minute faster than is comfortable, then type a test slowly with no mistakes. Change the practice text often. Most people break through in one or two weeks.

How many days does it take to learn Kruti Dev typing?

With 30 to 40 minutes of daily practice, most people learn the keys and the three main rules in 3 to 4 weeks. Speed and accuracy improve over the next few months.

Why does my Kruti Dev text look like English letters?

Because the text is stored as English letters and only the font turns them into Hindi. If the font is missing or changed, you will see gibberish. Convert the text to Unicode before sharing it online.
